  18. <p>     Here in the colonies, the truly cultured are so difficult to
  19. find. And yet, when it came time for Masterpiece Theater to
  20. replace retired sage/host Alistair Cooke, the show plucked a
  21. Yankee Baker, RUSSELL BAKER. Beginning next fall, the Pulitzer-prizewinning
  22. columnist will serve up all-American wit and wisdom to the loyal
  23. viewership of MT's renowned Anglo imports. Surprised at the
  24. choice, Baker jokes, "I never fancied myself operating on the
  25. level of sophistication that Cooke does." The TV newcomer's
  26. first step? He'll write his predecessor for tips on how to relax
  27. "when all those people are running around under harsh lights
  28. making big hand gestures."
