- <p> Here in the colonies, the truly cultured are so difficult to
- find. And yet, when it came time for Masterpiece Theater to
- replace retired sage/host Alistair Cooke, the show plucked a
- Yankee Baker, RUSSELL BAKER. Beginning next fall, the Pulitzer-prizewinning
- columnist will serve up all-American wit and wisdom to the loyal
- viewership of MT's renowned Anglo imports. Surprised at the
- choice, Baker jokes, "I never fancied myself operating on the
- level of sophistication that Cooke does." The TV newcomer's
- first step? He'll write his predecessor for tips on how to relax
- "when all those people are running around under harsh lights
- making big hand gestures."
